If you’re a beginner in crafting, we know how daunting it can be to know where to start. There’s so much talk of craft kits, but how are you supposed to know what to put in it? If you’re currently in this situation, don’t panic! We’ve put together this handy guide on how to start a craft kit.

The first thing that we would suggest is picking up a good selection of core tools that can used across disciplines to give you a bit of versatility. Luckily, we have a fantastic selection of such tools, so keep reading to find out what we recommend.

Scissors

No matter what craft you’re jumping into, scissors are an essential across the board. Our 9″ Straight Scissors are ideal for using with fabric and adhesive-backed materials, whereas our 6″ Straight Scissors are better suited to paper and card cutting. For a bit more precision, you can try out our Precision Snips, which are 4.5″ in length, so they really are ideal for smaller pieces.

Each of these scissors feature straight edge, Japanese stainless steel blades to ensure smooth cutting every time. They are also coated in Teflon to stop any of your materials sticking and to ensure maximum comfort, they feature an ergonomic design to put the least amount of stress on your hand when cutting.

A cutting mat

Much like scissors, a cutting mat is a key tool across almost every craft as it helps you protect your surfaces and gives you a solid base to craft on. We highly recommend our 13″ x 19″ Glass Cutting Mat – it’s perfect for papercraft and needlecraft, as well as for mixing colours on for art. It simply wipes clean!

We also have a selection of other cutting mats available in various sizes and for specific tasks, so if you aren’t sure which is for you, make sure you take a look and don’t hesitate to get in contact with us if you need help.

Adhesives

Adhesives is a whole other area of the craft kit that we could really delve into, but for a general approach, we’re big fans of the Collall All Purpose Glue. Moisture and water resistant, as well as heat and cold resistant, this is an extremely useful glue to have in your stash, and will prove useful around the house and in your crafting. If you’d like to see a breakdown of some of our other adhesive faves, make sure you take a look at our Adhesives 101.

Pokey tools and tweezers

If precision is your thing, pokey tools and tweezers are key for you. These tools will come in handy for all sorts of crafts, including die-cutting, sewing and more! Our four pack of tweezers includes anti-magnetic, smooth-tipped tools to help you with fine details. With a flat end, a straight point, an angle point and a needlepoint tweezer included, you’ll be able to remove even the most delicate pieces without disturbing your work.

Pokey tools are especially great for die-cutting as they have fine points that are perfect for removing tiny die-cut elements from your dies. They also include rubber tip protectors, so you can store them safely!

A craft knife

While scissors are great for cutting out larger items, a craft knife is perfect if you want to get right down into the detail. They’re perfect for paper cutting, cardmaking, decoupage and so much more, so you can choose between our Straight Craft Knife or our Swivel Craft Knife. Each have been ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in your hand and provide precision with ease.

A ruler

Make sure that you keep your edges as straight as possible with our Metal Edge Ruler. As this acrylic ruler features a stainless steel edge, you can use it with a craft knife, a rotary cutter, scoring tools and more to ensure that any lines you’re creating will be as precise as possible.

Once you’ve gathered all the core tools that you need, it’s time to find the perfect storage solution! It’s well and good having a collection of great tools that will assist you in any craft, but you need somewhere to put them.

If you’d like to store them at home, we’ve got the fabulous Desktop Tote. This case is perfect for placing on to your craft bench, your computer workspace or anywhere that you want to craft. It has all the space you could possibly need to store your essential tools, as well as any extras that you fancy, like dies, stencils, threads or anything else you could possibly imagine.

If you’re someone that much prefers the idea of crafting on the go, then you’ll love our Portable Tote. This bag is very similar to the Desktop Tote, however, it features handles to help you carry your crafting goodies wherever you go. Both of them also feature the same striking grey and purple floral print, so you’d be talk of the town!
